Last year F1 in Schools introduced a new element to the judging programme at the World Finals, with the Pressure Challenge, a task that all the World Finals teams took on with the determination and grit that had seen them win through to the World Finals.

The Pressure Challenge, partnered this year by Autodesk, is a task that the students have to complete with very little knowledge of its content, no assistance from tutors and within a specified time period.

For its introduction last year, the challenge was for the teams to produce a one-minute news report explaining the World Finals, for the local television station.  With only two hours to complete the task, the students proved the strength of their teamwork, their creativity in planning, presenting and producing the news feature as well as their ability to handle the pressure of a tight deadline. The resulting videos produced by the teams were all well executed, with the winning news report capturing all the excitement, passion and skills of the World Finals teams competing for the F1 in Schools World Champions title.  The winning video footage can be seen here.

The success of the Pressure Challenge last year has led F1 in Schools to make it a permanent element of the World Finals event and this year, the 38 teams competing will have a different challenge. The challenge will take place on the second day of judging and this year the only details the teams have been given is to arrive at the World Finals prepared to face the challenge, armed with their laptops preloaded with Autodesk® Fusion 360™, along with, of course, lots of imagination and creativity.  Autodesk provides students, teachers and academic institutions with free access to its full portfolio of professional 3D design software via the Autodesk Academic Resource Centre.

Andrew Denford, Founder and Chairman of F1 in Schools, says of making the Autodesk Pressure Challenge a feature at the World Finals, “All the work that is produced by the teams for the World Finals is done ahead of the event, so this element adds another dimension to the competition, giving well-organised teams with strong leadership the chance to shine. Just as in real life, and especially Formula 1®, it throws up an unexpected challenge that has to be completed, successfully, within a short space of time. I know our World Finals teams will relish this challenge and will produce some great solutions to the task set for them.”

The F1 in Schools World Finals 2014 take place with the assistance of a host of sponsors and supporters including Yas Marina Circuit, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, The Institution of Engineering and Technology, Autodesk, City University London, Etihad Airways, Tourism and Cultural Authority Abu Dhabi, Yas Island.AE and Radisson Blu Hotel.

About F1 in Schools

F1 in Schools challenges students to create their own Formula One team which is commissioned to design, construct and race the fastest miniature Formula One Car of the Future; a 21cm long scale model built from a block of balsa wood and powered by a compressed air cylinder. Each team of between three and six students creates a ‘pit’ display and showcases their work in developing their race car. At the World Finals each team will bring along a pit display, their cars and portfolio, as well as having prepared a verbal presentation for the judges. The cars race on a 20 metre track, with the cars covering the distance in just over one second, a speed barrier which is yet to be broken by any student team since it was set by Team FUGA from Northern Ireland at the 2007 World Finals with a time of 1.020 seconds.

F1 in Schools aims to help change perceptions of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) by creating a fun and exciting learning environment for young people to develop an informed view about careers in engineering, Formula One, Science, marketing and technology.
