Melbourne: Showers possible during Qualifying, dry conditions expected for race
Vienna, March 15, 2016 – In 2016 UBIMET joins the Formula 1 season for the third time as the meteorological services provider to the FIA, delivering high-precision meteorological information. The weather outlook for the race in Melbourne this weekend: On Friday a cold front with strong showers is passing through, for Saturday‘s qualifying there will be a mix of sun and clouds. The race on Sunday is taking place in likely dry conditions.
UBIMET experts will be present at all 21 races around the globe, bringing with them one ton of meteorological equipment. The team of meteorologists and IT experts set up weather stations, ground temperature sensors and a mobile precipitation radar at each race in order to closely monitor the weather situation and compile short range forecasts customised for each race track. Meteorologists in the UBIMET Severe Weather Centres in Melbourne, Vienna and New York also provide remote support for the on-site team. The weather information is available for all Formula 1 teams and it is critical for race strategy and planning such as and the selection of the tyres.
First weather outlook for the race in Melbourne
On Friday morning a cold front is rushing through with strong, possibly thundery showers. From noon on there will be only partly cloudy skies with a few showers. Both trainings might take place under wet conditions. The strong wind is coming from southwest and temperatures reach about 18 degrees.
On Saturday a mix of sun and clouds is dominating the weather. In the afternoon there is a growing chance of showers. The shower risk will rise up to 30 to 40 percent during Qualifying. Temperatures reach a maximum high of 19 degrees.
As of today, the race on Sunday takes place in dry conditions with friendly weather, reaching temperatures of 21 degrees.
