BRITISH TV PREMIERE FOR AUTOSPORT AWARDS
ITV to broadcast the ‘Oscars’ of motor racing

Monday 26 November 2007 (LONDON): For the first time in its 26-year history, the glittering Autosport Awards are to be broadcast on terrestrial television in the UK. Motorsport royalty from around the globe including Lewis Hamilton will attend this black-tie gala at London’s famous Grosvenor House Hotel at 8pm on Sunday 2 December.

Armchair viewers nationwide will catch all the action on ITV1 at 11:20pm on Tuesday 4th December. The Autosport Awards, in association with MotorCity Dubai, features categories spanning British and international competition - from grassroots racing to Formula One™ - with many of the winners voted for by the fans.

Twelve years ago, Lewis Hamilton claimed the karting trophy here, and this time around he is a contender for some of the evening’s most prestigious prizes: the British Competition Driver, International Racing Driver and Rookie of the Year awards. A week ahead of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards, it should give the 22-year-old from Stevenage the chance to hone his acceptance speech.

ITV Sport anchor Steve Rider will host the evening and interview racing heroes past, present and future, including the nominees for the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award. Six young British drivers still undergoing their apprenticeships will battle for a ?50,000 prize and, best of all, a test in Hamilton’s McLaren-Mercedes Formula One™ car.

Kevin Costello, Managing Director, Haymarket Consumer Media: "British motorsport is renowned throughout the world, and the Autosport Awards have celebrated one of our most specialised industries and successful areas of sporting competition for the last 26 years. With the 2007 Formula One™ season having excited millions of households it is fitting that, with ITV’s support, our country’s most skilled drivers will be seen together in living rooms across the nation."

Mark Sharman, Director of ITV News and Sport: "It has been a fantastic year for motorsport on ITV, with viewing figures for Formula One™ up by over 40 percent, and we are very pleased to be closing the season with this popular and often unpredictable awards show."
