Somber weekend for SRT
No score in Jerez de la Frontera
In the third round of the International GT Open, held on the Spanish Jerez de la Frontera circuit, the Brussels based SRT Corvette team and its driver pair Maxime Soulet – Isaac Tutumlu enjoyed little success. In the first leg the American muscle car was forced to retire due to a technical problem, whilst they still had a podium within their sights. The transmission had given up the ghost and any repair was impossible. As such they were unable to take the start for the second race.
Both the training and qualifying sessions ran smoothly for the Brussels based team; "we were convinced that we had the speed', Maxime Soulet commented, who shares the car with the Spanish football broker Isaac Tutumlu. "Notwithstanding our penalty seconds in the pit lane as the result of our two victories earlier this year, we were sure of achieving a good result in both races. During the qualifying sessions we twice grabbed a fourth starting place, even though this is a track that does not suit our car. Isaac took a great start, was able to play up front and I then took over the drive with a podium place as my ambition. Unfortunately the Corvette’s renowned mechanical reliability decided otherwise. The transmission broke and for us the race was over. "
Patrick Selleslagh: "Bad luck never comes on its own, because it was soon apparent that it was impossible to repair the car. We’ll now need to perform better in the coming races, but notwithstanding the dramatic race here Maxime Soulet still lies in fourth spot in the championship. He’s 24 points down on the leaders, whereas there are still 200 points to be won this season. We’re definitely not giving up the battle."
