In Canada like at an ice hockey match.
There are minimal "unikova zona" at the Montreal circuit. The barriers are mostly not far from the track, so there is no wonder that unusual number of drivers involuntarily checked how hard they were. The damaged parts were of course tires and suspension. Clearly, only the pilots who would drive with precision had a chance to succeed. The surprises started already in qualification. Button of B.A.R. won in front of M.Schumacher. That was the first time since the GP Bahrain for M.Schumacher to start from the first row. Quite the opposite, Barrichello had to have his engine changed and started last from the pit lane.

Both Renaults than surprised at the start, shot from the second row to lead in Fisichella-Alonso order. Button linked to them ahead of both McLarens. Schumacher sank to the sixth place. At the beginning it seemed that the cars would be riding in a stabilized string. After the first pitstop Button fell to the 7th place and M.Schumacher to the 12th place. Sato retired first, but after his car had been repaired, he came back losing 25 laps. He retired a bit later anyway with his engine on fire. After 20 laps all drivers had been in pits, except Barrichello, who went there later and it was clear, that he would pit just once. It paid, as he made his way from the 20th to the 5th and later to the 4th place. Renaults went through some dark period this time. Leading Fisichella was losing hydraulics pressure, had to slow down and let Alonso first. He retired in lap 32. Neither lead Alonso long. A collision of his right rear wheel with a barrier send him to pits, which was the first time he didn't finish this year. Both McLarens got to the leading places. However, after the second pitstop Montoya went to the track against the red light and was disqualified. That was the third time the leading pilot had to leave his place. After that Räikkönen kept in the lead ahead of Schumacher. The 3rd Trulli had to part from the race after the 42nd lap. Schumacher tried to catch up with the Räikkönen's 3 s advantage but overtaking the cars 1 lap behind didn't have the time to attack. He got away quite happy with 8 points and Barrichello added another 6 to the Ferrari's account. It has been the biggest gain so far, marking the team's comeback. Kimi Räikkönen gained his third victory this year and confirmed this year's McLaren quality standard. If it weren't for Montoya, the team's gain might have been better.
