This year's GP of Japan was the most dramatic race of the season. After 30 years the race returned to the FUJI Circuit, which was known mainly for its bad rainy weather. It was the same this year when the track was poured on with heavy rain. After two installation laps, the Safety Car stays for another 18 laps, then the race is finally started. During those 18 laps both Ferraris go to the pit stop, moreover F.Massa is awarded a drive-through penalty for passing in the Safety Car period, which he takes in the lap 47. A.Wurz retires. The standings in the lap 47 are: Hamilton, Alonso, Vettel. Lap 46 J.Button has a contact with N.Heidfeld, Button's front wing gets torn off. T.Sato continues the race with the same defect. Lap 44 both Button's and Sato's nosecones are changed, Sato's car catches fire coming off the pit stop, however, probably also due to the rain, the fire is put out and he goes on. Lap 33 - Hamilton spins having been hit by Kubica, who is penalized by the marshals, which happens when Kubica is in the first place. Lap 31 - the standings are - Webber, Kovalainen, Kubica. The race gets more dramatic, the rain still continues. F.Alonso's right side is damaged after a contact with one of the drivers. Lap 27 - Kubica takes his drive-through penalty and falls several places backwards. In the lap 26, Alonso hits the wall having spinned first, gets into the middle of the road where he remains standing still, his car being totally damaged, the race is over for F.Alonso, which may very well become the key moment of this year's Championship. The Safety Car is out again. The marshals clear off the remains of Alonso's car and the race is restarted 20 laps before the end.

Standings in the lap 10 - Hamilton, Kovalainen, Massa, Räikkönen. Nine laps before the end, Massa is called to the pit stop, which allows his teammate Räikkönen get in front of him. For him it means more points. N.Heidfeld retires two laps before the end. K.Räikkönen fights for a better place like a wild cat till the very last lap, but it is still not enough to beat Kovalainen. Also F. Massa duels Kubica for a better place and succeeds in getting to the 6th place. L.Hamilton wins his fourth grand prix, ensuring his leading position in the Championship. The freshman Kovalainen reaches points for Renault with his second place for the first time this season, K. Räikkönen comes third.
