Nobody was interested in anything else at the GP of Italy in Monza. Is Michael going to retire this year or not? Speculations, rumour, exclusive news, nonsense wherever you looked. And Schumacher cooled down everyone - wait until after the race.

The nineteen-year youngster Sebastian Vettel with BMW won the Friday's qualification again. That was no surprise though. Friday does not mean anything, does it? There were M.Schumacher and F.Massa right behind him. On Saturday, Massa was the fastest before Heidfeld and M.Schumacher. Alonso and Fisichella were no better than in the second five, together with McLarens and Kubica's BMW. During the qualification, for the longest time it seemed that the pole position was there for M.Schumacher, but literally in the last moment Kimi Räikkönen reached time better by 0.002 s, which is about 20cm. There were Massa and Heidfeld in the second row. Alonso was penalized for blocking Massa, his three best times were deleted and fell down to the 10th position. In the third row there were Button and Kubica, followed by de la Rosa and Barichello and finally Alonso and Fisichella. Especially the positions of both BMW pilots were amazing. The team originally wanted to use new engines, which gave up pretty soon though, and they had to stick with the old specifications. The start went well for Räikkönen and Schumacher, Kubica sneaked forward, whereas Heidfeld was dropping to the seventh place. The standings Räikkönen, M.Schumacher, Kubica, Massa, Button, Alonso, Heidfeld, de la Rosa, Fisichella, Barrichello lasted till the first pit stops. They decided the winner in fact. Räikkönen went to the pits earlier than Schumacher. Who then took a very fast lap with his light car and even though his mechanics were slower than Räikkönen's, he returned in the first position. The well doing Kubica still was third. Behind him there were Massa, improving Alonso before Button, Heidfeld who recovered after his tire had been changed and stopped his descend. Rosberg, de la Rosa and Yamamoto retired.10 laps to go smoke appeared unexpectedly at Renault and Alonso had to retire from the third position. There was an oil spill on the track and Massa survived a close shave doing his best to get the car back under control before a chicane. Consequently he had to have the oiled tires changed. He fell back to the 9th position and finished without points. Those went to M.Schumacher, Räikkönen, Kubica, Fisichella, Button, Barrichello, Trulli and Heidfeld. It was the 90th victory of M.Schumacher's , who then at the post race press conference announced that this was his last race in Monza and that he would finish his activities after the season.M.Schumacher's retirement marks the end of a famous period of F1. After J.M.Fangio, J.Brabham, G.Hill, J.Clark, J.Stewart, E.Fittipaldi, N.Lauda, A.Prost and A.Senna the biggest of them is leaving. He was amazingly lucky as he could race in the first-rate teams already as a young boy and had excellent cars at his disposal. R.Brown, an outstanding master of strategy and tactics, watched his back and he was generally cared for by the Ferrari team with J.Todt as its head. Michael was able to concentrate one hundred per cent on each race being capable of using all his best (including subliminal) qualities to gain and keep the Champion titles. When he quits in October, there will at last be time for him to be with his wife Corina, daughter Gina-Maria and son Mick. He, undoubtedly, will spend his fortune carefully and with satisfaction and tranquillity watch the others trying to reach his victories.

So far:
246 GPs
75 fastest laps
90 victories
1354 points
7 World Champion Titles
(The results are current after the GP of Italy in Monza 2006)
